COACHES ASSN

Committee elected The consensus of opinion among the 12 athletics coaches who attended a special meeting on Wednesday evening—called by Mr I. I. Crossen, convener of the coaching subcommittee to the Canterbury Athletic Centre—was that they did need their own coaching organisation. However, a technicality arose which temporarily held up further progress. Mrs D. Jamieson recalled that on four previous occasions coaches had tried to organise themselves, and the last time had become an affiliated association with its own constitution and profitable bank account. “At the moment, it is dormant and needs a shot in the arm,” she said. A new organisation could not be formed while there was one already in existence. Mrs Jamieson moved that the meeting appoint an Interim committee to work In conjunction with the Canterbury centre’s coaching subcommittee for purposes of calling an annual meeting of the Canterbury amateur coaches’ association. This was carried, and a working subcommittee of four — Messrs Crossen, I. D. Teague, B. Briedls and Mrs Jamieson—was set up to decide the date of the annual meeting, the format It would take, and any other

aspects. Earlier in the evening, Mr Briedls stressed that to succeed the coaches* organisation must be recognised by the Canterbury centre as a group within the centre. The reason, he said, earlier attempts had failed was a lack of administration and a waning of interest by coaches themselves.
