Certificates expiring
Many South Island scaffolders—probably more than half—have not yet renewed their five-year certificates of competency which will expire in 11 days* time. Without these certificates they are prohibited from erecting scaffolding more than 25ft high. Nearly 500 reminder notices have been sent out by the Department of Labour in Christchurch to scaffolders in Canterbury (including South Canterbury), Nelson. Marlborough and the West Coast. So far only about 180 renewals have been made in response. The Christchurch supervising safety inspector (Mr L. A. Pearson), said that a great many notices had been returned marked “address unknown,” and others had probably been put to one side and forgotten.
“I hope they don’t leave it too late,” he said. “It costs only 50c to renew the certificates—or $1 to replace it if it’s been lost. After the end of this month they will have to pay $2 and take another examination, written as well as practical.”
