"RUNATHON” PRIZES

Vouchers for top earners Prizes in the form of footwear vouchers will be at stake in the second Canterbury sponsored “runathon,” to be held from Rugby Park on November 28. The vouchers, for *2O, *l5 and *lO. respectively, will be “won” by the participants earning the greatest amount of money for Canterbury’s contribution towards the cost of sending the New Zealand cross-country team to Spain for the International championships next year.

A three-mile block course, starting in Innes Road outside Rugby Park and embracing Papa, nui Road, St Albans Road, Trafalgar Street, Edgeware Road, and Cranford Street, has been measured out for the run. Athletes taking part will be required to contribute only 75 per cent of their earnings from sponsorship to the cross-country fund. The rest will go to their clubs. Secondary schools and surf life-saving clubs are being asked if they wish to take part they will be expected to contribute only 50 per cent of their earnings to the cross-country fund.

Canterbury needs to raise about *2OOO to fulfil its quota of *4OOO and one of the organisers, Mr S. Jelley, is “pretty hopeful’* that this figure will be reached. Athletes in Timaru, which also comes under the jurisdiction of the Canterbury Cross-country Committee, will hold their own “runathon,” either on the same day as the Christchurch event or the next week-end.
