Council refuses more hotel car-parking

Proposals for additional car-parking space on the Wharenui Road side of the Blenheim Road Motor Inn, and for a second access from Wharenui Road, were refused by the Waimairi County Council last evening. Residents objected to the scheme at a public hearing last month.

The town planning committee had originally proposed to allow the second access from Wharenui Road but no more car parking space, but the council -re fused to agree. The town planning committee reported that in its discussion of the application, Cr I. Calvert had said that no case had been made out for more car parking space and that the proposed new outlet on Wharenui Road would create a greater movement of cars if the proposed car-park was opened and thus cause more noise affecting Wharenui Road residents. Cr F. J. Aitken said that the use of the new outlet to Wharenui Road would isolate four houses and give rise to complaints later. The council would be eroding residential zoning by allowing the access.

The hotel’s owners, Inns Of Canterbury, Ltd, had applied for a specified departure to allow use of land at 100 Wharenui Road for a car-: park, and for the use of land! at 280 Blenheim Road to I build a bottle store. The council approved of the bottle store scheme, and reserved the right to close the existing access from Wharenui Road if at any time it is considered to be a traffic hazard.

An application by Mr E. G and Mrs B. E. Popplewell to have a hairdressing salon at their property at 3 Aintree Street was refused, the council holding that proper provision was made for such uses in commercial zones, and to allow it would be detrimental to residential zoning. Mr A. N. Hall was given permission to rebuild an

electrician’s workshop at 18 I Waimairi Road, conditions in- ]

eluding the provision of offstreet parking and a ban on retail trading.

Mr and Mrs B. A. Lapthorne, who sought permission to build seven motel units at 9 Broad Road and 8 Larnach Street, were permitted to build five units, with special provisions to minimise noise.

Mr C. J. McFadden, 82 Johns Road, was given permission to subdivide his land to create a separate title for about an acre on which his home is built. John Morel, Ltd, was given permission to build four selfcontained flats and garages at 12 Field Terrace.

Avon Transport Service, Ltd, was allowed to have a building for storing the firm’s trucks at 300 Gardiners Road, a condition being that all storage and vehicle repairs stop at 455 Johns Road on occupancy of the new premises.

Mr E. E. Reynolds was allowed to extend a shophouse at 2 Heyders Road to provide a cool-room.
