tN.Z.PA.-R«ut«r—CopßrlohO MONTREAL, Nov. 17. The first person to be sentenced under Canada’s newlyinvoked War Measures Act was sent to prison for 15 months today after pleading guilty to being a member of the outlawed Quebec Liberation Front. Francois Mercier, aged 27, « music teacher, was arrested on November 5. The emergency act was invoked on October 16, after the banned terrorist movement had kidnapped a British diplomat, Mr James Cross, and the Quebec Minister of Labour, Mr Pierre Laporte, who was later killed. Mr Cross, the British Trade Commissioner in Montreal, has now been in captivity for seven weeks, but has not been heard from for a month. He was kidnapped by the F.L.Q. in its attempt to force the Government into releasing imprisoned members of the organisation. As Mercier heard his sentence announced, two more people were being charged with belonging to the F.L.Q. Forty-six of 499 people detained by the police for questioning have been charged with membership of the organisation.
