National transport conference in Chch

Senior men in the transport field have come from all parts of New Zealand to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand division of the Institute of Transport at Mona Vale today and tomorrow.

Sixty members of the division and about 40 guests will be present when the conference is opened by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R'. Guthrey) at 2 p.m. It is only the second time that the division has held its conference in the South Island; the previous occasion was in 1967. The chartered institute has its headquarters in London, and the body was incorporated in Britain in 1920, and was awarded a Royal charter in 1926. Membership throughout the Commonwealth and South Africa is now more than 12,000, and the main aim of the institute is the dissemination of transport knowledge. After the opening today,

the general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) will present a paper on aspects and problems of urban passenger transport, and the division’s annual meeting will follow. Tomorrow a paper on the evolution of sea transport, prepared by the assistant general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company (Mr B. S. Cole) will be presented, and the chairman of Air New Zealand (Mr G. N. Roberts) will present a paper on the evolution of air passenger traffic in New Zealand. In the afternoon, the deputy general manager of New Zealand Railways (Mr T. M. Small) will present a paper on the development of New Zealand railway passenger services.
