LOCAL BODIES REDUCED

The Local Governments Commission proposes that the Auckland area of 2038 square miles be administered by nine territorial local authorities, nine ad hoc authorities and parts of two other ad hoc authorities. At present the area is administered by 31 territorial authorities and 23 ad hoc authorities. The provisional Auckland scheme,-which came after the Wellington scheme announced last year, was issued yesterday by the commission. The North Canterbury scheme is now top priority

for the Local Government Commission, with the West Coast to follow. The chairman of the commission (Mr H. A. Fullarton), said yesterday that the commission had the responsibility of reviewing the boundaries and functions of more than 600 local authorities located from North Cape to Bluff. ■ When the North Canterbury, including Christchurch, and West Coast schemes were complete, the commission would have reviewed local authorities covering almost half New Zealand’s population.
