NOTED RACING TRAINER DIES

Mr J. L. Barr, one of Riccarton’s most successful trainers in recent years, died suddenly at his home last evening. He was in his 55th year. Mr Barr did not come into racing until he was in his early thirties. After the death of his father, the late Mr Stewart Barr, he started a

small team on the property then occupied by his mother, and his first major success was when he prepared Jimmy Flash to win the 1956 New Zealand Cup. Since then the Barr name has been to the forefront in almost every season. I Within the last month, he ■prepared Quetta to win the

Watkins Handicap and Ribaldo to win at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting last month. The Barr family have been associated with racing over a long period. G. S. Barr, a brother, another successful Riccarton trainer, died a few years ago. Among the good horses he prepared was Ray Ribbon, which won a W. S. Cox plate during a campaign in Australia. Mr J. L. Barr is survived by his wife, seven sons, and two daughters.
