TELEPHONE CALLUP

Wharf work change soon (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. The telephoning of watersiders at their homes to let them know whether they are required for work or not is expected to be one of the new features on New Zealand waterfronts soon. Talks are being held between the Wellington employers, the national negotiators of a sub-committee for New Zealand port employers, and waterside union representatives. Another feature of the new system will be a permanent force of “supplementary’ 1 workers who will also be on call on days when a large labour force is needed. “What we want to get away from is hundreds of men coming down to the wharf each day, registering and then either going to a job or going home again,” a spokesman for the port employers said. The men would be telephoned and told where their jobs were, and would report straight for work. The system worked overseas.
