VETERAN PICKED
The incluaon of the 38-year-old utility player, K. H. Bingley (Western Suburbs), is the surprise selection in the Canterbury men’s representative softball team to play Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu in Palmerston North during the weekend of November 21 and 22.
Bingley, who was the Canterbury coach during the--1968-69 season and a selector last season, has made a comeback to serious competitive play this season after an absence of 10 years. Bingley began his representative career in 1950 and played for Auckland for 10 years, including participating in eight Beatty Cup interprovincial tournaments. He was selected for New Zea-
land three times and The Rest twice. A second-baseman in his earlier years, Bingley has probably gained inclusion in the side as a pinch hitter.
Apart from the Richmond short-stop, D. Chee, who is unavailable because of examination commitments, and the youthful United pair, W. Keen and G Phillips, the team is the same as that which trounced Nelson and Marlborough two week-ends ago. The selectors (Messrs G. Griffin, R. Hal! and H. L. Gable, convener) have still to name one more player. The team is:—
K Smith (Richmond), M. A. Reid (Papanui A), D. Bradburv (United); B. Waine (Papanui A), B. Chee (Papanui Aces); L R. Pollock (Papanui A, captain); E. Crown 'Deep Freeze); C. L Chee (Papanui A); D. Phillips (Papanui A); N. Mattison (Richmond), G. Roberts (United), M. P. McOscar (western Suburbs), B. Mountford (United). K. Bingley (Western Suburbs). The team will train tomorrow at th. Papanui Domain at 5
