NATIONAL PANEL
Mr Mooney
elected
A former New Zealand wicket-keeper, Mr F. L. H. Mooney (Wellington), is a new national selector. He joins two • incumbents— Messrs K. R. Deas (Auckland), the new convener, and F. J. Cameron—and replaces the retiring convener, Mr M. E. Chapple.
Mr Mooney’s election, which came as something of a surprise, was in the face of a hefty list of nominations received by the cricket council’s board of control at the week-end.
He and Messrs I. A. Colquhoun were nominated—by letter—-by their associations; and both Messrs Cameron and R. T. Hunt were nominated by Otago. Mr Deas was nominated by Auckland; Mr W. McD. Anderson, of Christchurch, a former selector, by the South Island minor associations; and Mr S. N. McGregor, also of Christchurch, by Messrs W. A. Hadlee and A. G. Williams. The chairman, Mr J. G. Leggat—who had earlier been re-elected, unopposed, to his sixth term—said G. T. Dowling, the New Zealand captain, and Mr J. R. Reid, a former captain and selector, had indicated their unavailability this season.
