ADELAIDE.

The South African opener B. A. Richards hit a career best of 224 as South Australia amassed a score of 555 for six against the M.C.C. at the Adelaide Oval yesterday.

His 378-miiuite innings, rich with powerful drives and punishing leg-side strokes, boosted the state side to a 104run first innings lead with one day of the four-day match remaining.

Richards, 100 not out overnight, began the day by taking 14 off the first four deliveries by the fast bowler, J. A. Snow.

The pace of his innings never slackened as he reached 150 in 245 minutes, and his double century 67 minutes later.

The South Australian skipper, I. M. Chappell, added 13 to his overnight score of 80 before falling to the offspin qf R. Illingworth, making the state 270 for two. He and Richards put on 235 for the second wicket in 169 minutes.

Chappell’s brother, Greg, partnered Richards in another century stand, and after these two had been dismissed, J. Causby and K. Cunningham added 101 for the fifth wicket.

Causby was run out for 68, attempting an impossible single, but at the close Cunningham was still there with 52.

Snow, no-balled 15 times for overstepping the batting crease on Saturday, had clearly sorted out his run-up yesterday and was not called once in two short spells.
