Pastoral Princess contest
The Pastoral Princess contest to be held at the show on Saturday as part of the New Zealand Pastoral Queen quest has attracted 11 entries.
The contest has attracted more support than in either of the two previous years it has featured on the Show programme, due to organisation by the MidCanterbury Country Girls’ Clubs in having each girl sponsored for the event. Local firms or organisations have contributed $3O each to sponsor an entrant, $lO of this being paid to the Ashburton A. and P. Association, which will sponsor the winner to the area finals in Christchurch; and the other $2O towards a woollen frock for the contestant to parade at the Show. The winner of the Ashburton contest will receive a woollen suit valued at $6O. She will also be presented with the winner’s sash from last year’s Ashburton contest winner, Miss Ann Tubman. The winner of the area final in Christchurch, to be held in either March or April next year, will then go forward to the national final to be held in May or June, when the New Zealand Pastoral Queen will be crowned. The winner will receive an all-wool wardrobe and a trip to Great Britain and Canada for four weeks, with spending money provided. She will assist in promotional projects for the New Zealand Wool Board and the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. The Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand is sponsoring the
national contest in conjunction with the Wool Board, and with support from the Meat Producers’ Board. The Ashburton Pastoral Princess contestants will parade before the public at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, following An interview in the morning. They will be judged on grooming, general bearing and presentation, personality, and local and general knowledge, including their knowledge and understanding of New Zealand farming and its importance. The judges will be Mesdames D. Moon and J. N. Millar, both of Ashburton, and Mr C. P. Whatman, a farm advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture in Ashburton. The 11 competitors, whose photographs appear on this page, will parade in the names of the firms which sponsor them. The 11 contestants are: Pamela Frater, “Miss Smallbone Bros.;” Shirley Johnston, “Miss Burnett’s Motors;” Rae Leadley, “Miss Drummond and Ethridge;” Deidre McGregor. "Miss Bank of New Zealand;” Shirley McManus, “Miss Farmers’ Showroom;” Joanne May, “Miss Victory Lime;” Diane Mears, “Miss Ashburton Implement Services;” Alison Moore, “Miss Tekau Knitwear;” Margaret Robertson, “Miss Alford Forest Mill;” Carolyn Ross, “Miss Mid - Canterbury Transport;” Vanda Shaw, “Miss Tinwald Seryice Station.”
