Agreement near on road tunnel pond
An overflow pipe, provided certain requirements are met, would be an acceptable solution to the problem of a satisfactory outlet for the ornamental pond at the ChristchurchLyttelton Road-tunnel plaza, the Christchurch Drainage Board agreed last evening. A meeting between representatives of the board, the tunnel authority, the Heathcote County Council and the North Canterbury Catchment Board, had reached that conclusion, the board was told. It was hoped that the roadtunnel authority would agree to the solution in principle at its meeting today and the question, which had dragged on since 1964 would be resolved. “I think that it is time that the area concerned was not referred to as an ornamental pond,” the board chairman (Mr A. J, McTainsh) commented.. “There never has been an ornamental pond there and there never will be. It is just a floodcatchment area.”
Loan Issue.—Mr G. A. G. Connal reported that a new loan Issue of $400,000 had opened on ’ October 1, and subscriptions had ■ been very slow, only $26,000 being taken to date. The Drainage Board, Christchurch TransI port Board and the North Can- • terbury Hospital Board were all competing for loan-money within ' a slx-week period: asking the public for investments totalling
sl.3m. None of the loans had been well subscribed and the position was not satisfactory, said Mr Connal. Vandalism.—A. Edmond and Son, Ltd, sewer contractors, reported that vandals had stolen 24 kerosene lamps, 12 flashing lamps and two double flashing lamps with drums and chains attached, since the company began a contract in Dyers Road. The company said that it employed a security service patrol, but the thefts were outrageous. The board said that it had recently offered a reward of $lOO for information leading to the arrest of vandals. chairman Mr A. J. McTainsh was elected, unopposed, as chairman for the remaining year of the board’s term, by the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. Mr McTainsh has been the chairman since the former : chairman, Mr F. R. Price, died earlier this year. i The question of the chairman’s honorarium, at pres- , ent limited to a maximum of $BOO a year, was referred to ; the next meeting of the , finance committee.
The board’s secretary (Mr M. J- Home) said that a bill amending the Christchurch Drainage Board Empowering Act, to provide for the honorarium to be raised to a maximum of $l5OO a year, had been given a reading in Parliament, but had not yet been signed by the Govemor--1 General.
