New Jubilee Home lounge
Jubilee Home for elderly women celebrated the opening of its new lounge at a small function yesterday morning. The lounge has been added to the existing building. It is sunny and light, with warm orange and brown furnishings, little tables and a tea waggon in natural wood. There ate also very comfortable modern rocking chairs. Funds for the lounge came from a surprise bequest from the late Mr C. E. Woledge,
who had no previous contact with the home. i “We do not know why he i left us the money, but we i are very glad he did,” said Miss J. Potter, the matron. < It happened to coincide . with the opening of the cro- < quet season, so in spite of ; gentle rain several of the residents aimed for a hoop. Miss Potter, the chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Dr L. C. L. Averill) and the chairman of i the board of Jubilee Home ' (Miss Betty Webb) also took up mallets.
“I am delighted to be able to open a croquet season, it is the first time 1 have had the chance," said Dr Averill. The members of the Redcliffs Groquet Club go to Jubilee Home each week to coach the residents in the game. Morning tea was supplied by the residents and afterwards the guests were shown the chapel. The home was the Christchurch memorial for Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee in 1887. The idea was to build a
series of buildings each in an octagonal shape, with a grassy space in the centre. These buildings were to have been grouped round the central administrative and recreational building. However, the scheme was abandoned and the more conventional style of institutional building replaced it. Nursing staff now occupy most of the rooms in the old octagonal building, although two residents have rooms there.
