“Gallery” was a mixed bag

Geoff Walker’s inquiry into the private health insurance schemes that are apparently becoming more and jnore popular in New Zealand was a useful item. The factory foreman who was the chief advocate of the scheme put the case very well, and it was a pity that it had to be revealed at the end that one whose whole argument was based on the difficulties of getting into public hospitals had had a heart attack and had been admitted at once—into a public hospital. The exchange of diplomatic recognition between China and Canada was an obvious subject for discussion on a programme such as "Gallery;" therefore there was no reason why it should not have been properly prepared, and proper preparation would surely have produced a rounded presentation. Instead, viewers were given la version with an almost exclusively pro-China angle from Mr Alley, a political scientist, David Beatson did strive for a balance, but pretty vainly as •Mt’ Alley seemed able with some ease to pick up Mr Beatton’s questions and make them strawmen for knocking down. There are emphatically two sides to this question, and someone from the External Affairs Department, the Taiwan Embassy, or one of our “China-watchers” should have been called in to help the public to an opinion based on all-round knowledge. I David Beatson put in for

“Gallery’s” three items on Thursday made a very mixed bag. First, there was | Brian Edwards interviewi ing Mr Harris, the HereI taunga College teacher who < has said he will claim I $5094 from the Education I Department for overtime hours worked so far this year. When his pay was cut for time missed when attending la Post-Primary Teachers’ Association meeting, Mr ‘Harris interpreted this action to mean that he was being paid by the hour, hence his claim. In this interview, Brian Edwards adroitly led his subject, asking just sufficient questions to allow the viewing audience—and Mr Harris himself—to see the case Mrl Harris was presenting. There were pitfalls in plenty, into none of which Mr Harris fell —though some he seemed to avoid very narrowly. Pressed by Mr Edwards, Mr Harris seemed satisfied that his attitude and actions would do nothing to harm his colleagues’ cause, or prejudice it in the public’s mind. It is doubtful whether a majority of viewers would agree; but most would probably think that the inquiry was worth while, and that Mr Harris, handled as he was by Mr Edwards, was f.a.q. entertainment.

“Gallery” a needed and proper apology for an incident in Tuesday’s “Gallery” when a former gaol inmate was allowed to imply that two of the four Auckland prison officers held hostage at Paremoremo Prison last Sunday were “mongrels.” This implication, made by an unnamed former prisoner in an interview on prison conditions with Brian Edwards, has been the subject of a complaint to the N.Z.B.C. by the Public Service Association. In the circumstances, a brief apology at the tail of a "Gallery” programme was hardly sufficient; it would have been more appropriate and more gracious had the apology been made at the opening of the “Gallery” programme—and on behalf of the N.Z.B.G. by Brian Edwards.—PANDOßA.
