N.Z.B.C. ‘REGRETS REMARK

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 16. The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation apologised last evening on its television programme "Gallery” for a remark made by a former Auckland prison inmate interviewed by Brian Edwards on Tuesday. The remark, about two prison officers who had been held hostage in Sunday’s disturbance at Paremoremo Prison, brought strong protests from both the Secretary for Justice (Mr E. A. Missen) and the chairman of the Paremoremo prison officers’ sub-group of the Public Service Association (Mr J. Oosterman). Mr Missen termed it “in-’ credible” that “Gallery” should have given a former prisoner free rein to speak about prison officers in such terms, and Mr Oosterman said the strongest action was being sought to have the statement withdrawn. At the close of last evening’s programme, the commentator, David Beatson, conceded that a derogatory remark had been passed about the officers, and said: “We apologise for any embarrassment it may have caused, and regret that it was broadcast.”
