Hardy, skipper of the Australian America’s Cup challenger, Gretel 11, said on his return to Sydney that the American defenders were given a bonus they did not deserve when the Australians were disqualified. However, he said that Australia’s failure was through “lack of expertise in 12metre racing.” Hardy said: “Intrepid won, but by three races to two by my reckoning and not 4-1. “I still maintain Intrepid barged in the second race, and our disqualification gave the Americans a bonus they didn’t deserve. But we accept the rulings.” Hardy added: “It is possible to beat the Americans and we will do it one day, but off Newport, and not in the New York Yacht Club.” However, Hardy defended the New York yacht race committee, which disqualified Gretel II after a collision at the start of the second race. “They did ; their best to be fair, and their decisions were justified with the facts they found. But I am still against their decision to allow Intrepid a win after disqualifying us,” he said. “I don’t think they liked their responsibility and I think they, would like some international members included in the committee.”

League broadcasts. The N.Z.B.C. has announced that the New Zealand-Australia first World Cup Rugby league match will now be broadcast live on the YC network at 6.25 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, the Press Association reports. Other games in the cup series will be broadcast on the national programme at 1.55 a.m. on October 26, November 1, and November 8.
