Applicants should be preferably between 17 and 19, but may be up to 21 years of age. They must pass a medical examination although a slight defect in colour or normal vision would not automatically prevent acceptance. Height should be 5 feet 7 inches although allowance will be made for growth during training. Cadets should have had at least three years’ secondary schooling. While entry to Form Six or University Entrance examinations is preferred, applicants who are suitable in other respects may be accepted, and given the opportunity to study for these qualifications while training. Cadets who have University Entrance will be able to take units at Victoria University and some, following .their course of training, may be granted a bursary to take the Diploma or Certificate in Criminology at Auckland University. The Cadet Course gives both theoretical and practical training in all aspects of penal work. Cadets study prison administration, the causes of crime, and methods of treatment of offenders. There is a comprehensive programme of physical training, judo, organised sport, bushcraft, first aid and driving instruction.
