AIR TRAFRCCONTROL CADETS CIVIL AVIATION DIVISION MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT (VACANCY NO. 37) THE MINISTRY of Transport invites applications from young men with a positive interest in aviation who wish to make a career in Air Traffic Control. AGE: Applicants must be not less than 18 and preferably not more than 21 on January 1, 1971. EDUCATION: University Entrance with a pass in mathematics and preferably also in physics or science is essential, but students who are candidates for the University Entrance Examination this year may be considered. MEDICAL FITNESS: This is a prime requirement and applicants will be required to pass stringent medical examinations. TRAINING: Cadetships commence on January 25, 1971, and are for approximately three years. Training will include flying instruction as a pilot, tuition in air navigation, meteorology, theory of flight, air traffic control practices and procedures and allied subjects. Courses of instruction are interspersed with practical air traffic control training at airports throughout New Zealand. SALARY: Commencing salaries will be in accordance with educational qualifications and age. With University Entrance and no other relevant work experience the commencing salary will be $1486 a year and with Higher School Certificate $1486 increasing to $1686 a year after six months. Subject to satisfactory performance, salaries increase by annual increments, the present maximum for the scale being $2831. PROMOTION: On completion of cadetships and qualification for an Air Traffic Controllers’ Certificate, cadets will be promoted to Air Traffic Control Officers at a salary of $3813 a year (on present rates) and an initial maximum of $4544. Subsequently, when qualified for and employed on radar duties, there is automatic promotion to the next grade which has a salary range (at present rates) of $4719 to $5130 a year and there are good prospects for further promotion on a competitive basis. Salary is supplemented by penal rates and shift allowances for work on weekends, public holidays and at night. BOND: Cadets will be bonded, on entry, to serve in the New Zealand Public Service for a period of five years from the date of certification as an Air Traffic Control Officer.
