Official report and prices

The official report on yesterday’s Timaru wool sale issued by the South Canterbury Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the New Zealand Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, states:— “The offering comprised 17,128 bales of new season’s fleece, 6017 bales on account of the New Zealand Wool Commission, and 273 bales of scoured wool. “The wools represented a wide range of qualities from strong crossbreds to fine Merinos. The crossbreds would provide the bulk, but there was a'fair offering of shorn and woolly hoggets and a good selection of Merinos and it could be called a good October selection. “Owing to the good season most lines carried a little more condition than at last year’s October sale. Some hogget lines were marred by the non-removal of vegetable matter. The selection was drawn from all parts of South and Mid-Canterbury and North Otago. . “The market can be quoted as follows: t “Compared with the recent Christchurch sale, Merinos were 2i per cent to 5 per cent cheaper and halfbreds were up to 2j per cent cheaper. There was, however, a distinct premium for "specialty halfbred and Merino fleece descriptions. Compared with the Auckland sale extra fine crossbred was fully 2J per cent to 5 per cent easier. Fine crossbred was in buyers’ favour. All remaining crossbred fleece, skirtings and second-shear were unchanged, with strong crossbreds very firm and inclined in sellers’ favour. “Competition was fairly general, the main bidding coming from the Continent, with some support from Eastern Europe and local mills. Japan and Bradford gave limited support. “Prompt date for the sale is November 3.” The following is the official range of prices:-*-Fine Merino, 64/7(g:
