Taxi fares go up
Taxi fares in Christchurch increased by 10 cents a journey yesterday as a result of an interim fare increase granted by the Secretary of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek). According to the wording of the award, it is granted without prejudice to the manner in which the fare schedules will be ultimately adjusted. The Christchurch branch of the Taxi Proprietors’ Federation has lodged an application for a substantial increase in fares which is being sought mainly because of the increase in taxidrivers’ wages. According to several drivers there were no complaints from - customers and the increase appeared to have been accepted in much the same way as other increases were—with resignation. ' Taxi fares in Dunedin will rise on Monday by 10 cents on the’present 25-cent flag fail.
