Church move refused
A proposal to move an old church from Springston and use it for Roman Catholic services at 212 Burwood Road, was not agreed to by the Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening. The Rev. J. McHale had applied for a conditional use town-planning permit to allow the building to be moved to a residential A zone, but a sub-committee comprising the county chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) and Crs I. Calvert and R. C. Harrow inspected the building, and their recommendation that the move be not permitted was accepted by the council. ' Mr Rich said that the building was 59 years old, and not in .very good condition. A great deal of work would be needed to restore it, and in any case, the building would not be appropriate to its surroundings.
