Trainer’s two wins
The Templeton trainer J. W. Smoienski harnessed and drove the first and last winners at Motukarara on Saturday. Blackbeard, which was at lucrative odds after a sequence of finplaced performances, lasted out 11 furlongs slightly better than the second favourite, Mister Lincoln, in the opening event on the card, the First Akaroa Handicap. The other Smolenski-tralned winner was Sam Carter, which gave the 2min 18sec class sprinters a sound beating in the Mount Heriiert Handicap. Backers of the popular fancies could hardly say they had a good day. Although several of the favourites ran into minor places the only popular fancy to succeed was Sam Carter. False Idea, which came out best in a tight finish to the Paparua Handicap, was fairly well backed and the same applied to Logan Prince, winner of the Second Akaroa Handicap. Outside of these most of the winners were at good odds. Lessaday. an out-of-form trotter which gave R. Young the first of his two driving successes, won the Wairewa Handicap at odds of more than 14 to one. The respective divisions of the Waihora Handicap also went to little-fancied runners. Eden Pal, which give M. de Filippi his first winning drive, was the 13/12 favourite in the first division. The second division went to Frosty Chat which was 11/8 In the betting. Bambi, which completely outclassed his rivals in the Halswell Handicap, was the fifth favourite each way, but still returned his win supporters a $13.50 dividend;
