W. H. Beere wins club yachting trophy
W. H. Beere won the Christchurch Yacht Club’s Burgess t rophy when he gained another second placing in his Finn, Finntastic, on Saturday.
He sailed particularly well to finish only 11 min behind the catamaran, Stampede, (G. C. Penney), although the handicap honours were taken by J. McCutcheon in his Moth, Havoc.
Penny with a first and a seventh in the two heats, was the runner-up to Beere in the over-all placings. The third position in Saturday’s race was filled by Tom Rush, a Junior Cherub crewed by I. and N. Jackson.
Although she slipped from second to twelfth after being refused right-of-way by an Alpha skipper, Miss M. Stemmer was the successful P Class Penn Trophy contestant.
Miss Stemmer, the winner of the first heat, held an overall advantage over M. L. Wootton, who won the handicap section on Saturday. The race was notable for the fine
performance of D. Partington (Cadet), who led the fleet over the course and won by 48sec from P. Maynard (Tyke). The Christchurch and Mount Pleasant clubs held junior instruction courses on Saturday morning. P. G. Mander, G. S. Mander and H. L. England gave J.C. skippers the benefit of their wide knowledge at Christchurch, and 19 P Class youngsters attended the Mount Pleasant course.

P. Lester enjoyed a most satisfactory debut in open yachting when his new 0.K., Vanquero, finished third on handicap. He started 4min ahead of Hobson, Le Page, and E. Cave, and man-! aged to keep ahead of these more experienced competitors. The fastest time in the Currie - Trophy race at Charteris Bay I was returned by J. Wilson and G. Beaumont, sailing the Javelin, Jabberwock. The handicap winner was the Zephvr. Lola (J. Gordon).
Club events were severely dis-1 rupted yesterday by the strong south-westerly wind, and will be held later in the season.
