New Zealand Pilots

While most New Zealanders could only listen to the hourly bulletins tracing the course of the Battle of Britain, others were playing a mere vital role. Pilots flying in the Battle of Britain Included nearly 100 New Zealanders. Many of them were pre-war members of the Royal Air Force, but even so, by the end of October 1940, of the 78 New Zealanders with R.A.F. Fighter Command, 30 were members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

However they were not the only New Zealanders who took part In this historic battle of the air. New Zealand aircrews in Bomber and Coastal Commands all played their part in bringing victory to the R.A.F.

Little is said of these men who flew the “heavies” and who roamed the Englsh Channel in search of the enemy. During the months of the Battle of Britain 47 New Zealanders were killed. Twenty-four were Bomber crews and eight Coastal Command aircrews.
