FIRST LAP LEADER.—Since turning senior a few days after winning the national junior harrier championship last month, P. Watson (Methodist) has not been overawed by his more mature and experienced opposition. In his first senior race— Governor’s Bay-Lyttelton handicap—he recorded fastest time. Watson triumphed again in the first lap of the Takahe-Akaroa relay on Saturday when he broke away to lead at the change by 59sec. Watson (right) is shown passing the baton to another Canterbury champion, M. Clarkson, holder of the 800 and 1500 metre track titles.
