The New Zealand Forest Service is recruiting boys for professional training in forest research and management. Applicants will be selected from two groups, boys with University Entrance in science subjects and an excellent school record and those studying at a University for a science degree. After a short induction course at Rotorua early next year, successful applicants will be sponsored for a 4-year course B.For.Sc. at Canterbury University. Students can arrange to take the first year at one of the other New Zealand universities but must attend Canterbury University for the second and subsequent years. VACANCY No. 32. Ranger Trainees. The New Zealand Forest Service invites applicants under 20 years of age, in good health and of good physique. The minimum requirement is the entry qualification into Form VI with a pass in mathematics and good marks in English. A pass or at least good marks in either biology or chemistry is an advantage. Training is spread over 4 years following an induction course at Rotorua in January. The first year is spent in practical, forest work and this is followed by a year in the Ranger School, Rotorua. Trainees undertake a correspondence course in their first year and during this first two year period complete the examinations required for the T.C.A. Forest Ranger Certificate. Two further years of field work on different forests with increasing experience in supervision precedes the granting of a Ranger Certificate and appointment as assistant ranger. The duties of a ranger consist of forest management, planning and organising work, and the control of junior staff. The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has vacancies for approximately 20 technical trainees, in the general fields of physics, mechanical engineering, biology, chemistry and geology. Almost all vacancies are in the North Island. Trainees appointed for physics and for biology will be centrally trained for two years and may then be posted to a D.S.I.R. Division anywhere in New Zealand. For this reason male applicants are preferred. Minimum entry qualification is lower sixth-form certificate or lower sixth-form certificate with either mathematics and the appropriate science subject, or two science subjects. Appointees will be expected to continue with study towards the New Zealand Certicate in Science. Leave on pay to attend Polytechnic classes, or block courses where necessary, will be granted. VACANCY No. 70. Engineering Trainees. A number of Engineering Trainees will be appointed by the New Zealand Electricity Department in Auckland, Hamilton. Napier, Palmerston North, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. A training course incorporating fully paid leave towards N.Z.C.E. (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, and Telecommunications) is followed. In the first year basic training will be given in one of the department’s Technical Training Centres at Auckland, Palmerston North or Christchurch. In the first year trainees will specialise in one of the many interesting and challenging branches of work offered in the expanding field of electricity generation (Hydro and Thermal), electricity transmission, testing and communications. Engineering Trainees become Engineering Assistants on completion of training, and promotion on merit can result in appointment to Engineering Officer positions at salaries in excess of $5500 p.a. Applicants should preferably have at least four exemptions towards N.Z.C.E. through School Certicate and University Entrance passes in Mathematics, Science or Engineering subjects. MISCELLANEOUS.
