CARGO FOR CHILE
No attempt to use N.Z. ship (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 18. No attempts were made to have a New Zealand-owned or manned ship undertake the cargo service between New Zealand and Chile which will be carried out by the Norwegian motor vessel Ganja. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) told Parliament this when asked by Mr E. Isbey (Lab.,-Grey Lynn) if he had seen a report in “The Press” that the service would be started. “My information is that the service is based on the Australian trade to Chile and that calls at New Zealand ports are made only, when cargo is offering. The bulk of cargo carried to Chile does not originate in New Zealand and at this time it would not be economical to commence a service based on , New Zealand trade alone. “In the light of this no endeavour was made to en- ; sure that a New Zealandowned or manned ship had the opportunity to undertake the service.”
