Westralian report spurs mining market
Speculative nickel shares advanced sharply on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, although some late profittaking brought many off the top. Stocks with interests at Murphy Hills were eagerly sought. Industrials eased in early trading but made a partial recovery in the afternoon. Westralian Nickel was very firm, closing 360 c higher at the day’s best level of 1180 c. Poseidon, whose quarterly report is due at the end of the month, was caught up in the speculative fever and jumped 500 c to $BB, its best level for several weeks. A.C.M. had a very large turnover, ending the day 17c higher at 80c. Kathleen Investments reacted under a combination of profit-taking and disappointment that the Government would block any foreign bid for Queensland Mines. Kathleen fell 120 c to 1170 c and Queensland Mines shed 50c to $27.50. North Broken Hill, Peko, Mount Isa and C.R.A. were all a litle lower. However Robe River continued its recovery. Oils were again overshadowed by the mining market although there were
some good features. Woodside recovered an early loss but Clarence looked weaker towards the close. Bridge was marginally better. Leading industrials were irregular. B.H.P. finally closed 10c up after some initial hesitation, and Thiess put on 4c to 480 c. The banks were weak with C.B.S. 8c down at 225 c. The Bank of Adelaide was steady at 255 c.
