BAGPIPE MUSIC
Collection made by man of 90 About 2500 bagpipe tunes which have been collected by Mr S. R. Craig, aged 90, of Palmerston, will be formally handed over to the Highland Pipe Bands Association of New Zealand at its annual conference in Christchurch today. I Mr Craig, who was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, began playing the bagpipes at an early age, and has spent a lifetime playing, composing, teaching, and judging bagpipe music. He has competed with distinction in solo piping events at Highland games in different parts of Scotland, and has won more than 100 medals at events held in New Zealand. Although 90, Mr Craig still teaches and plays the bagpipes.
The collection of tunes for the bagpipes has been his life-long hobby, and has resulted in a collection which is thought to be unrivalled in New Zealand. Forty of the tunes were composed by Mr Craig. The two-day conference, will be attended by about 50 representatives of Highland pipe bands from throughout New Zealand.
