SENTENCE REDUCED

A sentence of nine months imprisonment imposed by a magistrate on Gordon Roy Brewer, aged 24, a freezing worker, on a charge of dangerous driving causing death was reduced on appeal to one of six months by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday. Mr J. G. Leggat appeared for Brewer. His Honour said that he reduced the sentence after reading the psychiatrist’s report which the magistrate did not have the benefit of. A sentence of imprisonment was appropriate because it was a very bad piece of reckless and irresponsible driving. Brewer was the driver of a car which struck a traffic island on the Heathcote Bridge and then collided with another car on March 12, Alexander Ward died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the accident. Brewer’s term of imprisonment is to be followed by a year’s probation.
