Obituary MR ANDRE SIMON

Acknowledged as an expert in the gastronomic world, Mr Andre Simon, founder and president of the Wine and Food Society of London, has died in England. He was 95. Mr Simon has been described as a Frenchman by birth, a Londoner by adoption, and, gastronomically speaking, a world citizen by choice. In 1965 the Queen, with the consent of the French Government, made him a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, for advancing the knowledge and uses of wine arid food in Britain. In 1902 Mr Simon began his wine career in Britain, taking a job in the London office of Pommery and Green, champagne importers. He soon became head of the firm. Mr Simon began his working life as a journalist. He wrote more than 112 books on food and wine. In 1933 he founded the Wine and Food Society, which then became his life’s work.
