ELECTION IN 1971
Mr Gutlirey available
The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) said yesterday that he would make himself available to the Citizens’ Association in the next local body elections in October, 1971. “But the choice of candidate is their prerogative,” Mr Guthrey said.
On Thursday evening the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee announced that its candidate would be Cr N. G. Pickering. Mr Guthrey said that Cr Pickering was an obvious choice and would be a very strong contender. He emphasised that he would not be thinking about election campaigns until about three months before the election. “I am not remotely interested in a campaign now. I am here to do a job as Mayor right now,” he said.
