New centre opens in Blenheim Road

A. R. Harris Company, Ltd, has opened a new drive-in sales and service department at 297 Blenheim Road. The new department offers a complete service for outboard boating requirements and is especially equipped to deal with Johnson outboard motors.

The modem outboard motor is no longer the simple two-stroke motor that so many are familiar with. The modem outboard motor is a sophisticated piece of engineering requiring specialised knowledge for its servicing or repair. The servicing of these motors also requires special tools in the hands of trained and experienced engineers, and this is a further reason for the manufacturers of Johnson outboards stressing the use of authorised service facilities.

A prime example is the introduction of the Capacitor Discharge ignition system. In this system, an invertor, transformer, rectifier, capacitor, Silicon-con-trolled rectifier, sensor, trigger-wheel and pulsetransformer have replaced the usual coil, condensor, breaker points and distributor cam used in the conventional battery-type ignition system. This capacitor-discharge type system produces approximately 25,000 volts of electricity, so it is easy to see why an untrained person could not only receive serious injury, but create damage to the system that would require extensive and expensive repairs.

These outboard motors are designed to give many hours of trouble-free motoring, provided that the operator does become intrigued with the complexities of the system and begin tinkering with the adjustments. The best insurance against motor failure is to have regular preventative maintenance service checks carried out by an authorised dealer.
