Fruit Marketing

Sir. —Leslie Hobbs made the observation in his book, “The Thirty-Year Wonders,” that the more the Labour Government moved to the Right the more its opposition moved to the Left, and the policy implemented by the first Labour Government “was only a pale shadow of socialism” compared with the National Government’s “planned economy” enforced during the 19605. The validity of this shrewd observation is illustrated in the Apple and Pear Marketing Bill which the National Government proposes to introduce. Under Labour we had prying inspectors known as “Sullivan’s Snoopers.” Now our orchardists are likely to face another bureaucratic best, the Pip-fruit Peeping Tom (with powers of entry and search). The Apple and Pear Board may have a case against the grower-retailer “black-market,” but let it leave the direct grower-con-sumer transactions alone. It is one of the few defences the consumer has against increasing costs of living.—Yours, G. M. EDMONDS. September 6, 1970.
