ANOTHER WIN BY FAIRLIE

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) FOREST HILLS. B. E. Fairlie (New Zealand) beat R. Ruffels (Australia) in the third-round men’s singles of the United States open tennis championship.

Fairlie won 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5. R. Laver (Australia) and C. Richey (United States) scored impressive straight-set victories. Completing the men’s third round, Laver easily beat another Australian, J. Cooper. 6-1, 7-6, 6-3. Richey defeated P. Barthes (France), 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. If both win their next matches, they will clash in the quarter-finals. Richey, seeded tenth, refused to speculate on his chances of wresting the championship from Laver. “I am physically fit and I think the Davis Cup experience was good for me” the 23-year-old Texan said: “I am serving better and I liave more confidence than I’ve ever had.”

Britain’s top woman player, Miss V. Wade, threw her racket more than 25ft in the direction of a line judge after losing a set on the final point of the new tie-breaking system.

The racket narrowly missed the woman judge and landed at her feet. Miss Wade, daughter of a vicar from Sittingbourne, Kent, then sat on the court at the woman judge’s feet and engaged in a staring match with her for several minutes. Seeded No. 5, Miss Wade defeated an American amateur, Miss S. Walsh, 6-3, 6-7, 6Results:— Men's Singles Third Round.—R. Laver (Australia) beat J. Cooper (Australia), 6-1, 7-6, 6-3: C. McManus (United States), 6-7, 6-4, 7- 6-3; B. Fairlie (New Zealand) beat R. Ruffels (Australia), 4-6. 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5.

Women's Singles Fourth Round.—Miss F. Durr (France) beat Miss J. O’Hara (Canada), 6-1, 6-1; Miss R. Casals (United States) beat Miss P. Teeguarden (United States), 7-6, 6-4; Miss V. Wade (Britain) beat Miss S. Walsh (United States), 6-3. 6-7. 6-1.
