Fairlie won 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5. R. Laver (Australia) and C. Richey (United States) scored impressive straight-set victories. Completing the men’s third round, Laver easily beat another Australian, J. Cooper. 6-1, 7-6, 6-3. Richey defeated P. Barthes (France), 7-6, 6-3, 6-4. If both win their next matches, they will clash in the quarter-finals. Richey, seeded tenth, refused to speculate on his chances of wresting the championship from Laver. “I am physically fit and I think the Davis Cup experience was good for me” the 23-year-old Texan said: “I am serving better and I liave more confidence than I’ve ever had.”

Britain’s top woman player, Miss V. Wade, threw her racket more than 25ft in the direction of a line judge after losing a set on the final point of the new tie-breaking system.
