Recital By Pianist And Violinist
Maurice Till (piano) and Lesley Anderson (violin) are to give a recital in Wilson Hall at Rangi-Ruru School, Hewitt’s Road, at 8.5 on Thursday night.
Maurice Till needs no introduction to Christchurch audiences. In this programme consisting of sonatas by Veracini, Beethoven and Ravel and the Chausson Poeme he will be joined by Miss Anderson, who returned to Christchurch last year after nearly 11 years in Hamilton. In the 1950 s she was active in Christchurch musical circles, both as a soloist and as leader' for some years of the 3YA orchestra. Miss Anderson had her early violin training with Harry Ellwood, and while still at school won several national awards in Royal Schools of Music examinations. After leaving school
she attended the University of Canterbury, where she graduated M.A. with honours in Latin. She then embarked on a secondary teaching ; career, at the same time retaining her interest in music. She was a member of I the first violins of the National Orchestra from its foundation in 1946 until she resigned to return to teaching in July, 1948. She had two periods of study in France at the University of Paris, in 1950-51 and again in 1954-55, and during this time she also studied the violin privately with Yvonne Astruc, w'ho was attached to the famous Ecole Normale.
Miss Anderson’s duties as principal of Hamilton Girls’ High School and now of Rangi-Ruru Girls’ School have prevented her from taking as active a part in music as formerly,, but since her return to Christchurch she has been studying with Stefan Czapary, of the Czech Quartet
