The Manawatu Racing Club has raised the minimum guaranteed prize for the 1971 Sires' Produce Stakes at Awapuni to $12,500, preserving its status as the richest two-year-old race In the calendar. The stake was increased last season, partly as a response to the challenge which the Awapuni Gold Cup meeting faced from the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s Stars Travel Stakes. The minimum guaranteed stake was $lO,OO0 —raised from an earlier guarantee of s7soo—and the amount paid was $10,650%. As usual, the winning owner receives the right of a free service to Pakistan IJ which, at $1750, is the most expensive stallion at public service in New Zealand. For the 1970 stakes 475 enrolments were received. It is an indication of the success of the stakes that this year enrolments closed at the end of June at 579.
