RACING Susan Jane Favoured In Three-year-old Debut

Ashburton patrons will be in for a galloping treat today if Susan Jane opens her three-year-old racing as brilliantly as she began her racing career 11 months ago.

Susan Jane “ran away and hid” from the others in the Juvenile Handicap on the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting last October. The distance was only four furlongs, but Susan Jane showed such brilliant acceleration that she won by nine lengths.

One of her well beaten rivals was Igloo, which finished third but 10 lengths back. E. J. Didham rode Igloo that day, and has since won three races on his father’s powerful chestnut, but he will ride Susan Jane today. Didham partnered Susan Jane when she won the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Champagne Stakes and the Richmond Handicap (with 9st 61b) at Riccarton at Easter. Susan Jane did no more; racing at two years but it was! the leading jockey’s good fortune to renew his association, with Igloo when that young-: ster won fresh up at Winga-! tui on June 1, following upj with wins on winter tracks at Washdyke and Trentham. Successful Sire Susan Jane belongs to a brilliant first crop sired by the imported Battle Waggon, and she helped to establish him as the leading first-sea-son sire for the season just ended. Fairview Lad and Panzer Chief have given Battle Waggon a good start for the present season with early three-year-old victories, and Susan Jane’s contribution in the South Island should be equally good. Royal Blue and Harold Bank have obvious claims in the first leg. the Gordons Gin Handicap, although these Ricca rton-trained gallopers have established a pattern notable mainly for near misses and placed runs.
