ENGINE FAILS
Children Spend Night At Sea (N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, September 7. Six children and one adult were towed back to Tairua this morning in an old mullet boat on which they had huddled together through the night waiting for help. The party left Tairua about 3.30 p.m. yesterday to go fishing. They were expected back about 5.30 p.m. There was no food or water on board.
A Whitianga police spokesman said the party had spent the night anchored about half a mile off Rat Island, 10 miles from Tairua, after the boat’s engine had broken down. Seas had remained calm through the night On board were three Dobney children of Tairua, Tim, aged 7, Garth, aged- 10, and Paul, aged 12. With them were two young girls visiting Tairua whose names were not immediately known, Alistair Needham, aged 17, and Terence Garbelino, aged 30.
