PONTOON RAFT

Antarctic Use Planned

In addition to the trimaran which the Canterbury University zoological department expedition to the Antarctic will use this summer, another party will carry out its marine research from a pontoon raft.

The pre-cut material for the raft arrived in Christchurch yesterday for storage by the Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It will be taken to Scott Base by air early next month, and will be asembled there. The 12ft by 12ft pontoon raft has been built by staff of the Antarctic division for the D.S.I.R.’s Oceanographic Institute, which will use it in taking samplings of the ocean floor in McMurdo Sound. The raft will be anchored by rope to the ice and the men on board will winch themselves along the edge of the McMurdo ice shelf. It will be used for about two months. If there is open water it is planned to use the raft to cross from Ross Island to Victoria Land.
