Doctors fear that venereal disease is reaching epidemic proportions in Poland, the Associated Press has. reported. official statistics show 20,800 new cases of syphilis last year, with 64 cases among children aged 10 to 14, a total rise of 25 per cent over the previous year. In addition, an estimated 200,000 persons a year contract gonorrhea. Officially, most of the blame is attributed to prostitutes: the police estimate that 57 per cent are infected. Alcohol is regarded as a prime factor. Statistics indicate that three-fifths of the Warsaw people contracting a venereal disease were drunk at the time.
