Few Fast Swim Times

There were few bright spots in a dismal turnout by competitors and spectators at the Canterbury section of the Naw Zealand winter swimming champlonsihps at Wharenui Pool on Saturday afternoon and evening. Only 50 of 650 competitive swimmers in Canterbury took part in the championships, which is an index of the winter training efforts. But there were a few good performances which made the exercise worth while. Miss C. J. Whiting continued her run of consistent performances with good times ,in the 100 metres butterfly and freestyle. Her time for the former, imin 9.9 sec is one of the fastest she has recorded in New Zealand, and she broke her own Canterbury junior and senior short course records in the freestyle with a time of Imin 3.9 sec. Miss I. Thomson, who has swum the mileage expected of all swimmers in winter training who want to advance in competition, broke the under 12 200 metres breaststroke record with a time of 3min U.9sec and she has become the best breaststroke prospect since the New Zealand representative. Miss A. Bunt retired last year. Miss Thomson should break 3min for the distance before the summer season is half gone. Close behind Miss Thompson was Miss M. McManus who also broke the former record with a lime of 3min 13.3 sec.

Although the turnout was dreadful in the boy's events, R. Gray, a dedicated swimmer and competitor broke his own Canterbury backstroke record in the 200 metres with a time of 2min 31.9 sec. He also recorded good times in winning another three events in the under 14 grade. The other bright spots came from the consistent, if a little slower performances of Miss J. Parkhouse. She has not had the stimulus of her friend and rival. Miss S. J. Hunter in the last three weeks, because Miss Hunter is still recovering from illness, but she won three events well. Miss J. Murdoch also gained three wins in the under 10 age group. The pluckiest competitor was M. Trembath in the under 14 400 metres freestyle. Trembath who has to swim in the wake of Gray, and at a disadvantage in strength and height almost broke five minutes for his event. His time, smin 2sec was an excellent swim. He was swimming for a new tracksuit, a spur offered by his father if he broke five minutes, but his father, impressed as the other spectators were with the gwim, thought the time was good enough to wararnt the prise. But the disappointing sight for the administrators who run the meetings so efficiently was

the lack of competitors and spectators. There were more officials running the meeting than spectators watching, and the quality of some of the swimming indicated that many swimmers, and perhaps their coaches, have not yet realised the need for winter training if they want to produce times for top competition.
