FALSE ALARM
A Shirley man, waking in the early hours of yesterday morning to see a bright red glow outside his window rushed out, waking his family and several neighbours, thinking the house was on fire.
The glow, however, came from a bright parachute flare apparently fired as a prank from New Brighton beach.
The flare lit up a wide area of Shirley and Wainoni about 12.30 a.m., and was the subject of several reports, a police spokesman said.
