' Superior fitness, combina- ' tion and individual skill ; paved the way for the win by i Hawke's Bay over the older ■ and more experien>ed Auck- : land team.

The match was played on the Domain Oval before a crowd of about 800, and the firm ground allowed both teams to play the controlled type of game they are noted for. ' The first half was very even but Hawke’s Bay led 10 at half-time by virtue of a penalty-bully awarded after the Auckland goal-keeper obstructed in the goal-mouth.

Hawke's Bay scored Its second foal about 10 minutes Into the second half after M. Weston had received a pass in the circle from the right. She drew the goal-keeper and passed to Mrs M. Hiha, who was unmarked and had an open goal to push the ball into. This goal took some of the sting out of the Auckland side and Hawke’s Bay slowly took control of the game. It con-

trolled the ball in mid-field for much of the second half between setting up frequent attacks: Auckland persisted in attacking through the centre where the defence was strongest. Miss B. Mason, who did not get a match in the New Zealand trials on Saturday afternoon, made several creditable saves for Hawke’s Bay and preserved her record of not having a goal pass her tn the week of the tournament. The final was really the only time she was called on regularly to show her ability.

In the Auckland side Miss S. Haden, at centre half, stood out with some fine tackling and trapping and accurate passing. The sure tackling of Miss M. Chappell saved Auckland a number of times. HILLS CUP In the final of the Mills Cup In the minor division North Otago won by a single goal, scored by Miss J. Stringer from a penalty bully mid-way through the second half. Taranaki tried desperately to score in the last 15 minutes of the match but virtually the whole North Otago team was defending its goal.
