Fairlie Beats Top S. African
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK. The New Zealand Davis Cup player, B. E. Fairlie, will meet one of the many Australian men in the third round of singles in the United States Open tennis championships today.
Fairlie’s opponent will be R. Ruffels, but he will go into this match with renewed confidence after his magnificent victory over the South African professional, C. Drysdale, in the second round.
Dropping the first set, 3-6, Fairlie won control of the play and took the next three, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Another upset was the defeat of R. Gonzales (United States) by N. Pilic (Jugoslavia) in four sets after he had won the first set. However the biggest surprise so far occurred when J. D. Newcombe and A. D. Roche, the world’s number one doubles team, were beaten in the second round by the Americans, C. Pasarell and E. van Dillen, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. The Australian pair, who
won their fourth Wimbledon doubles title in June, started well but could not hold the Americans in a match marked by brilliant strokes and long, spectacular rallies. Down 4-5 in the fourth set, Roche and Newcombe fought off three match points before Pasarell drilled a forehand placement down the right sideline off Roche’s second service to take the match.
The only third-round clash of seeded players will be between the Australian, F. S. Stolle, the fifteenth and winner of the title in 1966, who plays R. D. Ralston (United State), seeded nine. R Laver, the number one seed for the tournament, will meet his countryman, J. Cooper, younger brother of the former Australian tennis star, A. G. Cooper. Laver, winner of the tournament last year when he also won the Australian, French and Wimbledon titles in his “grand slam,” already has disposed of one countryman in a second-round match. The main women’s contest will be played on the centre court between the fifth-seeded Miss V. Wade (England) and Miss S. Walsh (United States). Miss Wade, a favourite with
United States tennis spectators because of her colourful play and comments, was runner up to Mrs M. Court (Australia) in last year's final. Results:— Men's Singles Second Round.—R.
