CAREERS IN STATISTICS THERE are a number of vacancies in the Department of Statistics for suitable persons at various grade levels, through reorganisation and expansion of the department’s activities. Some of the work of the Department of Statistics involves the application of mathematical and/or statistical and economic theory and concepts and are thus suitable tor persons holding appropriate qualifications. Many positions are, however, suitable for persons who can assimilate an appropriate training course. Statistics could be described as economic or social facts presented in number form, and require the prior appreciation of the detailed economic and social subjects fields to which they relate. Accordingly, the present need in the Department of Statistics is for persons who, with or without degrees or parts of degrees or accountancy qualifications, are—- • experienced in general clerical and supervisory and/or administrative skills. • have a flair for researching into economic and social phenomena. • can write lucid reports • can order their work in a businesslike fashion and can provide effective leadership to staff.. There need not necessarily be any particular academic qualification requirement for the promotion of otherwise suitable persons. In-service training in statistical techniques will be provided by the department with the help of the State Services Commission Staff Training Branch. It is stressed that good experience, and aptitude for economic and/or social research and report writing might be as important as the possession of special academic qualifications. Applications from person with part of the accountancy qualification or of commerce, economics, arts, science or law degree would, however, be especially welcome. ■ j positions will be in Wellington but there will be a number in Auckland, Christchurch, Lower Hutt, and Palmerston North. Commencing salaries according to qualifications and experience will be at various levels up to $5217 per annum in certain cases. Applications on form P.S.C. 17A quoting Vacancies Nos. 4062 to 4065 should be forwarded to the Secretary, State Service Commission, P.O. Box 8004, Wellington, by Wednesday, September 16,1970.
