INQUIRY IN PARLIAMENT

Classroom Building (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept 6. Asked by Mr M. A. Connelly (Lab., Wigram), what was the cost per foot for classrooms in the Canterbury Education Board’s area, and the comparative costs in 1960, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969, the Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys), said in Parliament that it was not possible to give costs in those terms “Since 1956 all education boards have built schools under the ‘white-lines’ policy which sets a maximum cost per pupil-place,” Mr Taiboys replied. “The figures given are square-footagd calculations derived from each board’s maximum costs per pupil-place, and in fact the actual costs will be below this figure.”

The figures he gave were. 1969 from September, $7.88; 1969 to September, $7.30; 1968. $7.30; 1967, $7.42; 1966, $7.38; 1960, $5.74.
