LECTURES ON DEATH

Extension Course

Six evening lectures on “Man and the Fact of Death” have been arranged by the departments of extension studies and philosophy of the University of Canterbury. The course will start on Wednesday, with further lectures every Wednesday evening up to and including October 14.

“Death is one of the inescapable facts of life,” the introduction to the course programme says.

“Religions have attempted to come to terms with it and philosophers have disputed over arguments for immortality. Today, for many neither religions nor philosophical arguments for survival carry much weight. Nevertheless, the importance for the individual of getting the fact of death into some sort of realistic perspective remains, and, therefore, there is need to examine what contributions can be made to this end by the medical and social sciences, as well as to view contemporary religious and philosophical reflections on the subject"

The lecturers for the course are Dr E. D. Anderson, of the department of psychological medicine at Chrstchurch Hospital; Dr L. J. H. Davies, a general practitioner; the Rev. D. Glenny, a Presbyterian minister; Canon E. A. Johnston, the principal of Christchurch College; Mr J. C. Thornton, senior lecturer in the department of philosophy; and Mr J. G. Wilson, a lecturer in the department of philosophy.
